Welcome to the Bering Sea
Elders Advisory Group.
Our mission is to enable Alaska Native Tribes to fully participate in the federal fishery management process regarding upcoming decisions affecting the Bering Sea from Kuskokwim Bay to Bering Strait. Bering Sea Elders will support and guide the Tribes in the use of traditional knowledge to define areas important for subsistence and to promote protection of our way of life.
Our objective is to support Tribes in developing a unified proposal for federal fishery managers that protects subsistence use areas, and places of ecological significance that are necessary to support the species we depend on, from bottom trawling in the northern Bering Sea.
All Tribes who rely on ocean and coastal resources in the region are invited to join. Other Tribal organizations are welcome as supporters of the Bering Sea Elders Advisory Group.
“Our people have survived since time immemorial due to a complete understanding and respect for the land and waters that provide food, clothing and spiritual sustenance. We are now facing challenges before unseen by our people. This project engages our villages and will help our children to stay connected to their roots and the wisdom of the Elders.” – Arthur Lake, Kwigillingok
